The National Medical Commission (NMC) was indeed constituted by an act of Parliament called the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. This act came into force on September 25, 2020, as per the gazette notification dated September 24, 2020. The NMC replaced the MCI and dissolved the temporary Board of Governors formed to oversee the NMC NEW RULES and implement reforms in medical education.

Functions of NMC

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has been established to fulfill several key responsibilities:

Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2023

The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on November 18th, 2021, outline the eligibility criteria for foreign medical graduates (FMGs) to practice in India. These regulations were introduced in response to the concerns raised by various stakeholders after the release of a draft notification proposing significant changes for FMGs in April 2021.

To be eligible for permanent registration and practice in India, FMGs must fulfil the following criteria:

Duration of MBBS Course: The total duration of the MBBS course in the chosen foreign university must be at least 54 months, Including a minimum of 12 months of internship in the same medical institution.

Medium of Instruction: FMGs must have studied in a university where English is the official medium of instruction.

Subjects Studied: FMGs should have studied specific subjects that are essential for medical practice in India. These subjects Includingude Community Medicine, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency or Casualty services, lab services, and their sub-specialties.

Duration of the Course: And also, the FMGs’ theoretical, practical, and clinical training must be equivalent to the MBBS course in India. They should have completed 12 months of compulsory internship from the same institution where they completed the other parts of their course.
